The Voice battle rounds continued on Monday night (October 20). It was an unfortunate night for coach Gwen Stefani though as she found herself facing against Adam Levine to win a steal twice during the night – and losing both times. This meant that Adam used both of his steals throughout the show meaning that Gwen is the only coach with a steal left going forward in the battles.
Check out the battles of the night.
Contestants: (Team Adam) Damien vs. Kelli Douglas
Song: “Knock On Wood”
Thoughts: They opened the show with a bang much to the excitement of coach Adam. Blake said it would come down to a matter of taste because Damien has an explosive feel to it while Kelli is more soulful and smooth and Pharrell agreed saying they’re two different singers and hard to compare. Adam loved Damien’s explosion as well as Kelli and how she stepped up to the plate.
Contestants: (Team Gwen) Jessie Pitts vs. Ryan Sill
Song: “I Need Your Love”
Thoughts: After briefly making Gwen and Gavin think they were love in rehearsals, these two sure had some great chemistry during their battle. Blake and Adam both said Ryan’s pitch was perfect but Blake said that Jessie won it out in the end but Pharrell went with Ryan because of the way his voice cut through. Adam thought it was more suited for Jessie but that Ryan prevailed because he had to work harder. Gwen loved Ryan’s attitude and Jessie’s uniqueness and spirit.
Winner: Ryan Sill
After an emotional goodbye, Blake decided to press his steal button for her because of her uniqueness and thinks she could win, it’s his second and last steal of this round.
Contestants: (Team Pharrell) Blessing Offor vs. Katriz Trinidad
Song: “Do I Do”
Thoughts: This was a battle of the extremely soulful singers and great voices. Gwen said they’re both shocking for different reasons complimenting Blessing’s effortless and rich tone while Adam complimented Katriz for stepping up to the challenge because the song was more of Blessing’s style and she did well. Blake said it was pretty equal and agreed that Katriz had to step up a lot and it was impressive. Pharrell felt they both did a great job raising to the occasion.
Winner: Katriz Trinidad
It didn’t take long for Adam to press his steal button and gave a really nice pitch mentioning his wife before Gwen jumped in on the action adding she’d like to get to know him more. He decided to go with Adam.
Contestants: (Team Adam) Ethan Butler vs. Matt McAndrew
Thoughts: Blake couldn’t remember the last time they saw two people get so lost in the song and thought they could be a duo with how well they worked together. Pharrell said that Ethan surprised him the most and added that they both approached the song differently and he loved that. Gwen thought it was more suited for Matt and Ethan really stepped up to the challenge. Adam was so happy with both of them and thought they both did fantastic.
Winner: Matt McAndrew
Contestants: (Team Blake) Bree Fondacaro vs. Taylor Brashears
Song: “You’re No Good”
Thoughts: Pharrell said that he would’ve liked to see Bree lose herself a little bit more in the song while he felt Taylor was just so confident and related more to Taylor’s approach. Gwen thought they didn’t do the song justice because they lost the melody. Adam could feel the different approaches and liked Taylor’s confidence approach more. Blake was proud of both of them.
Winner: Taylor Brashears
Contestants: (Team Pharrell) Danica Shirey vs. Toia Jones
Thoughts: After emotional coaching sessions with Pharrell and Alicia, these two closed the night in a big way. Gwen said both of their voices were so powerful saying it’s inspiring to sit and watch them do that. Adam said doing a Beyonce song is like trying to slay a dragon and they did that and more with that performance. Blake said the performance was a 10 all the way through. Pharrell complimented them both for singing for themselves and taking his advice.
Winner: Danica Shirey
Adam didn’t waste a moment in pressing his steal button but it wasn’t over as Gwen pressed her’s creating another battle between the two and Adam won out again with his second and last steal of the night.
And that wraps up night 3 of the battle rounds. Here’s what the teams looked like at the end of the night – a (*) indicates a stolen contestant while italics represent newly added contestants. Interesting to note that most of the steals so far come from Pharrell and Gwen’s teams. Gwen is the only coach to have a steal going into night 4 of the battles on Tuesday.
