The Voice ditched the “Battles Round 2” format they did in the spring and went back to the traditional Knockouts for the third round of the competition on Monday night (October 27). In this round, the coaches cut their teams in half by pairing together two people and having each of them sing on their own and sing a song of their choice. Also this round each coach gets one additional steal.
And to make things even more interesting, Taylor Swift joins the show as a key adviser helping out all coaches with their teams.
Contestants: (Team Gwen) Bryana Salaz vs. Sugar Joans
Songs: “Heart Attack” (Bryana) – “Love On Top” (Sugar)
Thoughts: Adam said that this is the crappiest decision because she has to pick between two amazing artists. Blake said that it’s not normal for someone as young as Bryana to be able to sing like that while Sugar does have that but in a different way. Pharrell promised Sugar that if Gwen didn’t pick her, he would press his steal button so fast. Gwen complimented Sugar for taking all of her advice and doing amazing and that Bryana did everything perfect and did exactly what Taylor told her to do with the song.
Winner: Bryana Salaz
And Pharrell kept his promise and made the first steal of this round and pressed it right away giving Sugar Joans a spot on his team going forward.
Contestants: (Team Blake) James David Carter vs. Griffin
Songs: “You’ve Got a Friend” (James) – “As Long As You Love Me” (Griffin)
Thoughts: Pharrell said that James brought his own flavor to it while he was impressed by former team member Griffin’s own take on JB. Gwen said Griffin really surprised her but felt James was more believable. Adam called Griffin’s performance was the “man version” of that song and was surprised but James would be the winner. Blake loved that Griffin did everything Taylor told him and he admitted he was wrong about James’ song choice and he did great. It’s another case of a stolen player getting the boot in the next round.
Winner: James David Carter
Contestants: (Team Pharrell) Danica Shirey vs. Katriz Trinidad
Songs: “Saving All My Love For You” (Danica) – “Superwomen” (Katriz)
Thoughts: Gwen said she always felt like Danica always does so great but Katriz really came out and shocked her. Adam said the fact that Katriz is so young and can do that is amazing and felt that with Danica it’s a challenge of how she can keep raising the bar because he thinks she’s the one to beat. Blake called Danica a “perfect singer” and can’t believe how much Katriz really stepped up. Pharrell loved Danica’s transformation and again commented on how much Katriz really steps up and has improved so much.
Winner: Danica Shirey
Contestants: (Team Adam) Damien vs. Toia Jones
Songs: “How Do I Live” (Damien) – “Crazy In Love” (Toia)
Thoughts: Blake said Toia’s run was just so good and so entertaining and said he loved Damien’s song but Toia was just over the top and fun. Pharrell called Damien “flawless” and said that former team member Toia really just tore the entire place down with her performance. Gwen thought Damien’s song choice was so great while Toia was perfect and so animated and perfect. Adam again loved Damien’s song choice while he was skeptical about Toia’s but she was incredible. The result was a shocker and not one I agree with – especially after that performance. But again, there’s a case of a stolen act losing in the next round.
Contestants: (Team Blake) Jessie Pitts vs. Tanner Linford
Songs: “Your Song” (Jessie) – “Calling All Angels” (Tanner)
Thoughts: Pharrell said what Tanner brought to that song made him think of that song differently and his age makes it even more impressive but gives the battle to Jessie. Gwen called Tanner’s voice powerful and loved the way he worked the stage but called former team member Jessie’s performance off the charts. Adam loved Tanner’s voice and how his voice doesn’t match his looks and with Jessie he felt there’s more for her to give. Blake thought Jessie’s voice was studio perfect and loved that Tanner has started to come out of his shell. Blake broke the pattern and picked a stolen artist to move forward – a very rare move even in past seasons of the show.
Winner: Jessie Pitts
Contestants: (Team Pharrell) Luke Wade vs. Taylor Phelan
Songs: “Rich Girl” (Luke) – “Rather Be” (Taylor)
Thoughts: Gwen couldn’t believe how good both of them were especially complimenting Luke’s stage presence and said it was cool to see Taylor without the guitar. Adam said these two were the major loses for him in the blinds and couldn’t declare a winner but promised that one of them is headed to his team. Pharrell loved that Taylor let the world in with his performance and loved that Luke went with the feeling within.
Winner: Luke Wade
It didn’t take long for Adam & Gwen to press their steal buttons for Taylor Phelan and Blake soon joined them making it the first and only 3 button steal. Adam said that he continues to impress him throughout. Gwen said she can tell he’s a real artist and they have similar tastes. While Blake thought he displayed the most artisty and wants to help shine the spotlight on him all the way to the finals. He went with Adam because he has fought for him every round.

James David Carter
